With the holiday season fast approaching, it presents an opportunity for people to reflect on what they have. A lot of Canadians, especially those in the Greater Toronto Area, will be thankful for the fact that they get to go home at night. However, there are some, and more than the average person may think, who do not get to come home to sustainable living situation. And that is what we; The Toronto International Design Centre is trying to change with our event, Design Forces XP in support of Habitat for Humanity GTA taking place November 28th 2019.

Our event is aiming to help remove some of the barriers low income families face with finding an affordable living situation. The money raised at our event, through ticket sales and silent auction will help Habitat for Humanity GTA purchase land, building materials and pay for trade services so families in need of a safe and decent home can have an affordable place to live in.

There is no denying that access to affordable housing is becoming a distant dream for many low income families in Toronto. There are over 100 thousand households on the waitlist for Toronto’s social housing with the average wait time being 10-12 years. What’s more, a report from Toronto’s Vital signs, shows that in 2018 the average price of a house was nearly $800k – more than double from just ten years ago when the average cost was $358K.

Habitat has made an incredible impact on so many lives and the belief is that our partnership will help remove barriers to affordable housing both creatively and in new, meaningful ways. The hope is that people will feel energized and more aware of how the spaces we live and work in, play a pivotal role in our overall health and wellbeing, and that they can engage and support Habitat in new ways (outside of physically working on home building projects).

The multi-sensory soiree will engage and inspire by bringing together a diverse group of people from the arts, design, architect community and everyone in between. Guests will interact and engage in fun and exploratory ways, while giving back to a great cause for the betterment of the less fortunate living in the GTA.
